The good people at STY TRU BTS recently hosted us for the album launch of the debut album of vocalist Sio titled sbtxts at Dassler’s in Braamfontein.
Sio is on a musical expedition. Her sultry vocals are usually accompanied by thumping house beats. However, she decided to take the road less travelled with sbtxts (subtexts). The album is a platform for Sio to flex her song writing and poetry muscles over a bouncy, off-kilter electronic soundscape.

Sounds for sbtxts were provided by Atjazz, Luka, Daev Martian, Zain Valley and Jullian Gomes.
The event was a lowkey and intimate occasion that was filled with good company, good drinks and good music provided by Kid Fonque, Daev Martian and the lady of honour, Sio. She started things off with a poem from the album called subtexts, which was an affirmation to woman empowerment, something that Sio is quite passionate about.
Double Tap & Blu were the crowd’s favourites of the night. The acoustic versions of cuts from the album were complemented by the Rhodes keyboards. The combination of Sio’s honey covered vocals, the eclectic smorgasbord of electronic sounds led to a wonderful musical experience. If only we received an encore.
We got to have a quick chat with Sio after the show and asked the reason for the shift in musical direction. Sio said that she has been singing on house songs for as long as she’s been singing professionally. The lethargy that came with that inspired her to switch it up musically.
The first clue that she gave us that she is a genre bender was in 2018; with her work on rkls (reckless), an experimental hip hop soul album by Kid Fonque & D-Malice. She’s willing to sing to boom bap, folk, soul and even jazz. Just don’t give her any trap beats.
A dope event and a dope album, sbtxts is a an album to have for those “on chill” moments in the summer.
