Last time we heard from Jonny Joburg, he was living it up there in the States. It is possible for one to be missing Africa while doing your thing over the Atlantic Ocean. Probably why he named his latest track after his hometown.
This explains the tribal drum elements on his latest single, City of Gold. The 4 on the floor beat has a familiar West African chant of “oshi baba, o-shi ba-ba” floating around the bridge. The light frantic keys are a nice touch to the Rhodes keyboard backed soundbed.
Gigi LaMayne then steps up & chops the beat like a chef in the kitchen as she muses on the trappings of the city with bright lights. Jonny himself does a decent job on the hook.
City of Gold is an off-ramp from Jonny Joburg‘s previous singles, but it is a welcome effort.
